I told you so

Why say I told you so?” To prove a point; you are right and someone else is wrong.

It is patronizing (no one likes to be patronized).

It creates friction in relationships.

It forces people to close off and they are less likely to share their opinions in the future.

It focuses on the negative (errors/mistakes).

It is not constructive.

It is not empathetic (we should all strive to be more empathetic).

This week I left the house to pick up my daughter from theater and mistakenly drove to cheer—a 45 minute detour in all. My wife told me where to go when I left the house.

Afterwards she said I’m sorry” instead of I told you.”
