A friend asked for motivational book recommendations and without hesitation the first one that sprang to mind was The Power of Intention by Wayne W. Dyer. While I would not classify myself as religious in the traditional sense, and therefore my beliefs are agnostic, I’ve always perceived a pervasive energy accessible to all of us. It’s been called many things. In his book, Dyer labels it as “intent”.
“In the universe there is an immeasurable, indescribable force which shamans call intent, and absolutely everything that exists in the entire cosmos is attached to intent by a connecting link.”
- Wayne W. Dyer, The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way
For me, affirmations, intentions, and mantras are interchangeable terms, alluding to phrases or statements repeatedly voiced to invoke tranquility, clarity, or insight—keeping them at the forefront of consciousness.
Dyer’s concept resonates deeply with me. I was raised in a household that valued meditation and positive thinking. I learned to use meditation to quell anxiety, stay present, and visualize my aspirations.
Intentions have significantly shaped my professional trajectory. While intangible and therefore impossible to truly measure, visualization and daily affirmations serve as my anchors.
I’ve discovered that adhering to a consistent practice of introspection and vocalization my intentions bring forth a harmonious energy which aids my professional endeavors. When challenges arise or business feels daunting, I resort to my intentions to ground me.
Many of my intentions revolve around fostering compassion, forgiveness, and acceptance—while keeping my ego in check. Dyer outlines seven steps for ego transcendence in The Power of Intention:
These steps, coupled with my intentions, serve as daily guardrails in my life. Witnessing the transformative impact of vocalized intentions leaves me awe-struck.
In our frenetic, technically intricate lives, mastering control over our minds, reflecting on desires, and approaching each day with an open heart holds immeasurable value for professional growth.
Although bookstores are brimming with literature on business, wealth, and achievement—many of them exceptional—the focus often centers on tasks and tangible pursuits. The true missing link, I’ve come to believe, lies within our minds.
Yet, embracing this notion requires genuine openness. I admit, it’s a formidable undertaking—one I commonly stumble with. However, each time I return to this practice, challenges appear less taxing.
“When you’re connected to the power of intention, everywhere you go, and everyone you meet, is affected by you and the energy you radiate. As you become the power of intention, you’ll see your dreams being fulfilled almost magically, and you’ll see yourself creating huge ripples in the energy fields of others by your presence and nothing more.”
- Wayne W. Dyer, The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way
There is no empirical evidence that I’m aware of, but I am, regardless, certain of its efficacy. I wholeheartedly endorse this transformative book and its lessons and remain convinced they possess the potential to reshape your professional (and personal) life.
