Father’s Day

There are so many articles, poems, cards, and words written about what father’s mean to their kids. About our role in our families; our impact in our children’s lives. I appreciate the kind words, adoration, and support.

But today I am thinking mainly about the impact my children have had on my life. How becoming a father has made me a better person. The sheer privilege of having this role.

My children have taught me so much. Being a father has forced me to reflect on my flaws and shortcomings—and provided opportunities for me to grow.

My reactions to situations have changed because I think more what I want to impart on them. The way I process things is different knowing that I want to be a steady and positive influence in their lives. Being empathetic, emotional, and vulnerable is behavior I try to model now. I realize that my actions and words will leave an indelible mark on their lives. It’s not something I take lightly.

Having kids alters your life in profound ways. They leave a lasting mark on your soul and teach you daily how to be a better person. Being a father is truly an honor.

PS. I miss my dad. As more time passes however, I feel less sadness and more appreciation for being his son. I laugh often retelling stories of growing up with him. Cheers, dad.
