Hobbies enrich your life

I’m a hobbyist, constantly exploring new things to learn. Hobbies provide a much-needed break from the daily grind, often dominated by screen time. Recently, my interests have shifted away from technology towards more physical activities. After a long workday, the last thing I want is more screen time. Instead, I engage in hands-on activities like yard work, home repairs, playing sports with my kids, working out, socializing with friends, or walking the dog.

Most of these activities don’t involve screens or much technology at all. Often, I’m breaking a sweat and sometimes feel physically sore—but in a satisfying way. While my work at the agency is fulfilling, the cumulative screen time can be exhausting, becoming harder to handle as the years go by. By late afternoon, I long for a break.

Don’t get me wrong—I love what I do and consider myself fortunate. But work isn’t my only passion. Life is short, and I have a myriad of leisure pursuits. I find that I’m interested in a lot of different things.

I’ve always been a hobbyist. When friends are bored, I’m not—you could say I like to keep myself busy. There’s always something to do, often spontaneously. Many times it’s something small that turns into a larger project. I’m certain these odd jobs benefit my mental health in numerous ways. Here’s a few that come to mind:

Stress Relief

Hobbies, outside interests, crafts, and side hustles offer a break from daily routines and responsibilities. Focusing on something else can significantly relieve stress. Some activities even serve as a form of meditation.

Happiness

Not everyone is passionate about their job, and even those who are can have moments of disenchantment. Finding activities that bring joy to your life enhances your overall happiness.

Physical Health

Many hobbies require physical movement—hiking, dancing, yoga, sports. Staying active is crucial for health and contributes to feeling fit and happy. I often aim simply to move.

Social Interactions

Engaging with people who share similar interests is beneficial for emotional well-being. Building relationships, fostering new friendships, and participating in community activities contribute to a more fulfilling life.

Joy

Doing things you like provide enjoyment and fulfillment. These activities allow you to engage in pursuits purely because you love them, giving you a sense of purpose and joy that enriches life.

Hobbies offer countless other benefits, including improved work performance, new skills acquisition, and boosted confidence. I read Arnold’s Pump Club daily, and he has a saying, be useful.” I love that saying, but for me, it’s be intrigued.”
